50 First Dates – Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole

Israel’s medley rendition of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World has a become a hugely popular song given the mellow vocals and sweet ukulele. 50 First Dates uses this song to cap an emotional happy ending, as have other movie including: Finding Forrester (2000).

Over the Rainbow was written by Harold Arlen (music) and E.Y. Harburg (lyrics) in 1938 and made famous by The Wizard of Oz. Meanwhile, What a Wonderful World was originally written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. The song was custom-made for Louis Armstrong who then made it a timeless lullaby.

Known as the Gentle Giant, Israel, was a major force in Hawaiian music. His commercial success beginning in the 1990’s brought music listeners & interest beyond the Hawaiian Islands. Iz passed away in 1997.
